We thought it would be nice to hear from a recent bride today, so here is some great advice from Kath about satisfying the legal marriage requirements in your state:

“Avoid surprises and look up the legal requirements for marriages and civil unions in the state you’re marrying a few months before the wedding is scheduled to take place. Because nothing is ever simple, residents and non-residents abide by a different set of rules in some states. But in all cases, marriage licenses are obtained in the office of the county or city clerk. The people who hand out the licenses? They’re either unfailingly cheerful because they love seeing people in love make a commitment or unfailingly grouchy because they’ve had to deal with way too many starry-eyed lovebirds.

After you file your application, your friendly (or not so friendly) clerk may tell you that you’ll have to come back in one day, two days, or if you’re in Wisconsin, five whole days. Whether this applies to locals, people from elsewhere, or both is up to the state. Residents may be able to take a marriage preparation course that eliminates the waiting period, and both groups may be eligible to pay a lower licensing fee after sitting through secular or religious prep courses. Age limits and ID requirements vary by state. That blood test nonsense you hear about in old movies? The practice has been abolished in all but a handful of states. Find out if yours is among them at Marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/a/bloodtest.htm. Then visit USmarriagelaws.com to find out what you’ll need to bring to the county clerk’s office.

But watch out—legal requirements for marriage can change and may differ slightly by county. When in doubt, give the clerk a call (many of the city and county office numbers are listed in the previous link—a quick Google search for ‘marriage’ and the county you’re marrying in should net you the rest) and find out how they prefer weddings in their locality to be kicked off. In most states, you can get married immediately after receiving the license, and there may even be qualified officiants on site so you don’t have to wait for more than a few quick breaths to be joined in holy matrimony.”

Wow, thanks, Kath! That’s probably more than you wanted to know about legal requirements for marriage, but it’s nice to be sure you’re legally wed!

Most brides-to-be have little to no experience negotiating contracts, which means much of what is promised to them by wedding vendors never gets put into writing. Consequently, those brides-to-be risk not only being taken advantage of, but also being left without any legal recourse. But The Wedding Professor’s new eBook changes all that and puts the power of negotiation into the hands of brides and grooms, who are the customer and who, in most cases, are making quite significant investments.

It’s not at all uncommon today for brides and grooms to add their own flair to their vows by having people close to them recite wedding ceremony readings. The readers are usually friends and relatives who, for whatever reason, were not chosen to be in the wedding party. Having wedding ceremony readings is a great way to include people you care about in your wedding ceremony, but choosing the recitations isn’t always easy. Religious wedding ceremony readings are quite popular, but there’s no reason your wedding ceremony readings can’t be a favorite poem or even something you’ve written yourself. There are lots of resources online that list some of the most popular wedding ceremony readings along with plenty of lesser known ones, so look to Google for inspiration!

Here’s a great question about wedding ceremony planning that we recently received:

I’m getting married this summer, and everything wrt wedding planning is going smoothly. I’m actually surprised how easy everything has been, since I didn’t know much about weddings before getting engaged. The only problem? My family and my fiance’s family practice very different religions and both have made themselves clear with regard to their expectations where the wedding ceremony is concerned. Long story short, each family is assuming that we’ll get married using their traditions. We, however, are pretty agnostic where religion is concerned and want a non-religious (or at least religiously ambiguous) wedding ceremony. How can we make this clear without offending anyone?

Oh, family. Can’t live with them, can’t beat them about the head with the proverbial rod. Well-meaning relatives cause more wedding planning strife than all of the wedding vendors in the world put together, and that’s just the ones who aren’t actively trying to offend you! When it’s just the appetizer selection that’s causing disagreements among family yet to be bound together by matrimony, it’s pretty easy to smooth things over. It’s when things like religion (or divorce, remarriage, cultural traditions, etc.) are involved that things get hairy.

Why? Because a family’s religion is so bound up in that family’s identity that it can be hard for relatives to understand that the younger generation doesn’t necessarily believe in the same things. Couple that with wedding ceremony planning and you have a recipe for misunderstanding that results in a pretty sour dish.

Now it seems like you have two problems here. The first is that your families are expecting different wedding ceremonies, each based on the religions in which you and your fiance were raised. Sometimes differences like this can lead to competition among families. The good news is that since you don’t want your wedding ceremony to reflect either religious tradition, one family won’t seem like a winner while the other seems like the loser. Your second problem is that both sets of relatives are expecting a religious ceremony, and that’s not what you want.

Uh-oh! From where we sit, it looks like you’re just going to have to come right out and tell your families that you want a non-religious wedding ceremony. If nothing else, you can always frame it like so: “We don’t want to offend either family, so we’re keeping the wedding secular.” Of course, that could also be seen as offensive. We think that it’s time you and your fiance tell your parents the truth. You’re both adults, after all, and coming clean will save you a whole lot of time in the future if you think your families will expect you to take part in religious ceremonies or holidays in the years to come.

We can’t, however, say that no one will be offended, since religion is a touchy topic at the best of times, and this is wedding planning, where whoever can find something to be offended about, will. Tread carefully, but be true to yourselves. You’ll treasure your wedding ceremony memories so much more if you don’t let anyone tell you what it should be. Have the wedding ceremony you really want and cope with the consequences as best you can.

A mayor, justice of the peace, notary public, a humanist minister, or even (sometimes) a ship’s captain may legally preside over your wedding. It doesn’t matter what sort of wedding you’re planning, as these types of officiants can preside over almost any ceremony. In other words, you don’t have to be saying your vows in city hall or on a ship.

Unless you have your heart set on marrying in a church or other religious institution, consider choosing an alternative space that can accommodate both your wedding ceremony and wedding reception. Many beautiful and elegant spaces are not typically used for weddings, but can be rented out for events. Make a list of the of museums, libraries, art galleries, and upscale restaurants in your wedding area, then call around to find out if any are open to hosting your wedding and how much they would charge for the use of the space. Don’t forget to ask about seating and catering and clean-up so you know in advance whether you’ll have to hire a caterer, rent party supplies, or do your own post-wedding cleaning. Also, remember that the size of your ceremony and reception venue will dictate the size of your guest list, so if you want to have 200 guests, cross little galleries and restaurants off your list of potential venues.

The sand ceremony (also sometimes known as the unity sand ceremony) is a ritual that can be performed by the bride and groom after they say their wedding vows. It’s a beautiful and sacred ceremony that’s by now known all over the world, but isn’t as old as most couples think it is. That’s not important, however, if you’ve fallen in love with the sand ceremony and want to perform it at your own wedding! All it takes is two small vases or jars and one large vase or jar and two portions of colored sand. Either silently or reciting a blessing like the Apache wedding prayer, the bride and the groom simultaneously pour their smaller vases of sand into the larger vase so the colored grains pour over one another and blend. The unity sand ceremony represents the blending of two lives, but unlike the unity candle ceremony where the two flames become one, the unity sand ceremony also represents the bride and groom’s autonomy within the union.

A bride who said her “I dos” this past August wrote to tell us how much she enjoyed all the wedding planning advice here at Daily Wedding Planning Tip, and we are so glad we could help! But we did ask one thing of her in return for the help we offered… no, not her firstborn! We asked her to share a piece of advice with all the brides-to-be who read our blog. She said yes, of course, and we’re delighted to pass her tip on to you. She said:

I’d tell future brides that they should do things the traditional way and not see the groom (or bride, I guess) until the ceremony. That means even if you’re getting married in the evening and have to wait all day, don’t even peek at your groom until you’re walking down the aisle. That’s what my husband and I did, and it made everything so much more magical and special. And exciting and emotional!

We actually saved time by taking all the wedding pictures we were in separately (like me with the bridesmaids and me with the groomsman and my husband with the attendants, etc.) so we’d have more time to take the pictures of just us. Doing it that way was kind of a pain because in our small ceremony venue we had to work to avoid each other, but it was worth it! I’d do it again in a second, if I had to. Walking into the church and seeing the groom for the first time that day was amazing.

We bet it was! But we also understand that with all the details that go into making a wedding day perfect, it’s not always easy to keep out of sight before the ceremony. Sure, if you are working with a talented wedding planner, he or she will make sure nothing goes wrong while you relax with your bridesmaids in the bridal suite. The rest of us have to figure out how to make ourselves scarce while also wrangling flower girls, finding the stylist who’s gone missing again, and keeping our newly divorced uncle from hitting on our friends. The best way to do this is to enlist the help of people like the mother of the bride, the maid of honor, the best man, and anyone else who might be willing to help hold down the fort while you’re making yourself stunning.

However, what if the issue isn’t getting things done before the wedding but convincing your bride or groom that steering clear of one another before the wedding is a good idea? In that case, if you’re a bride and your intended is the groom, consider playing up how busy and girly and ultra-estrogenic things will be in the bridal suite. Or just say that ladies will be changing their clothes in there and no men are allowed save the wedding photographer. Then again, you could just try telling the one you love that this is important to you and it’s just one day, so give in already!

You may be wondering if we here on TeamWED kept a bit of distance between ourselves and our spouses on the wedding day. Well a quick poll of all our bloggers reveals that, yup, all but two of us didn’t see our hubbies before saying “I do.” We asked the odd chicks out why they chose to buck the trend and meet with their spouses before walking down the aisle. The two that didn’t, it turns out, are Jewish, so they had to meet before the ceremony to sign the ketubah, or Jewish wedding contract. Otherwise is seems that not seeing the groom before the wedding ceremony is one old tradition that is alive and well… at least here at TeamWED! And you know, we agree with the bride quoted above. Not seeing our grooms before the wedding made the ceremony seem that much more exciting. Plus, we got to see the look on their faces when we revealed ourselves at the ceremony venue doors. Now that was priceless!

Here is what many know as traditional wedding vows:

MINISTER:

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered together here in the sign of God – and in the face of this company – to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony, which is commended to be honorable among all men; and therefore – is not by any – to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly – but reverently, discreetly, advisedly and solemnly. Into this holy estate these two persons present now come to be joined. If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together – let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

Marriage is the union of husband and wife in heart, body and mind. It is intended for their mutual joy – and for the help and comfort given on another in prosperity and adversity. But more importantly – it is a means through which a stable and loving environment may be attained.

Through marriage, GROOM’S NAME and BRIDE’S NAME make a commitment together to face their disappointments – embrace their dreams – realize their hopes – and accept each other’s failures. GROOM’S NAME and BRIDE’S NAME will promise one another to aspire to these ideals throughout their lives together – through mutual understanding – openness – and sensitivity to each other.

We are here today – before God – because marriage is one of His most sacred wishes – to witness the joining in marriage of GROOM’S NAME and BRIDE’S NAME. This occasion marks the celebration of love and commitment with which this man and this woman begin their life together. And now – through me – He joins you together in one of the holiest bonds.

Who gives this woman in marriage to this man?

BRIDE’S FATHER OR ESCORT:

Her family and friends gathered here today do.

MINISTER:

This is a beginning and a continuation of their growth as individuals. With mutual care, respect, responsibility and knowledge comes the affirmation of each one’s own life happiness, growth and freedom. With respect for individual boundaries comes the freedom to love unconditionally. Within the emotional safety of a loving relationship – the knowledge self-offered one another becomes the fertile soil for continued growth. With care and responsibility towards self and one another comes the potential for full and happy lives.

By gathering together all the wishes of happiness and our fondest hopes for GROOM’S NAME and BRIDE’S NAME from all present here, we assure them that our hearts are in tune with theirs. These moments are so meaningful to all of us, for “what greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined together – to strengthen each other in all labor – to minister to each other in all sorrow – to share with each other in all gladness.

This relationship stands for love, loyalty, honesty and trust, but most of all for friendship. Before they knew love, they were friends, and it was from this seed of friendship that is their destiny. Do not think that you can direct the course of love – for love, if it finds you worthy, shall direct you.

Marriage is an act of faith and a personal commitment as well as a moral and physical union between two people. Marriage has been described as the best and most important relationship that can exist between them. It is the construction of their love and trust into a single growing energy of spiritual life. It is amoral commitment that requires and deserves daily attention. Marriage should be a life long consecration of the ideal of loving kindness – backed with the will to make it last.

Exchange of Vows

MINISTER TO GROOM:

Do you GROOM’S NAME take BRIDE’S NAME to be your wife – to live together after God’s ordinance – in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sadness and in joy, to cherish and continually bestow upon her your heart’s deepest devotion, forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto her as long as you both shall live?

GROOM:

I will.

MINISTER TO BRIDE:

Do you BRIDE’S NAME) take GROOM’S NAME to be your husband – to live together after God’s ordinance – in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sadness and in joy, to cherish and continually bestow upon him your heart’s deepest devotion, forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto him as long as you both shall live?

BRIDE:

I will.

Exchange of Wedding Rings

MINISTER:

What token of your love do you offer? Would you place the ring(s) in my hand?

May this/these ring(s) be blessed as the symbol of this affectionate unity. These two lives are now joined in one unbroken circle. Wherever they go – may they always return to one another. May these two find in each other the love for which all men and women year. May they grow in understanding and in compassion. May the home which they establish together be such a place that many will find there a friend. May this/these ring(s) on her/their finger(s) symbolize the touch of the spirit of love in their hearts.

Handing ring to the Groom

MINISTER TO GROOM:

GROOM’S NAME, in placing this ring on BRIDE’S NAME finger, repeat after me: BRIDE’S NAME), you are now consecrated to me as my wife from this day forward and I give you this ring as the pledge of my love and as the symbol of our unity and with this ring, I thee wed.

Handing ring to the Bride

MINISTER TO BRIDE:

BRIDE’S NAME, in placing this ring on GROOM’S NAME finger, repeat after me: GROOM’S NAME, you are now consecrate to me as my husband from this day forward and I give you this ring as the pledge of my love and as the symbol of our unity and with this ring, I thee wed.

Pronouncement

MINISTER:

May you always share with each other the gifts of love – be one in heart and in mind – may you always create a home together that puts in your hearts – love – generosity and kindness.

In as much as GROOM’S NAME and BRIDE’S NAME have consented together in marriage before this company of friends and family and have pledged their faith – and declared their unity by giving and receiving a ring – are now joined.

You have pronounced yourselves husband and wife but remember to always be each other’s best friend.

What – therefore – God has joined together – let no man put asunder.

And so, by the power vested in me by the State of ______ and Almighty God, I now pronounce you man and wife – and may your days be good and long upon the earth.

You may now kiss the bride.

Wedding Contract Advice from The Wedding Professor

Known across the matrimonial world as The Wedding Professor, Richard Cadieux has been a certified wedding consultant since 2002 and has lent his expertise at more than 500 weddings.
