Engagement Announcements

As if there wasn’t enough wedding stationery for brides and grooms to worry about, enter the engagement announcement. What’s an engagement announcement, you ask? Simply put, it’s a card or letter mailed out by the bride-to-be or the bride-to-be’s parents (and sometimes by the groom-to-be’s parents) that lets the world know that so-and-so is engaged to be married.

You may be wondering what is wrong with a phone call or an email, and the answer to that is nothing at all. Some couples or their relatives simply prefer to go the old fashioned route and announce the engagement via formal correspondence. Or a postcard… whatever.

If you like the idea of printing (or ordering), packing, and sending engagement announcements, tread carefully for it’s easy to fall into faux pas territory. Make sure that you only send engagement announcements to those people who will also be invited to the wedding, lest you come off looking like you’re a greedy gift grabber. And make sure that your engagement announcement can be differentiated from a wedding invitation so that you and your parents are not fielding calls from confused loved ones wanting to know why their wedding invitation didn’t include any details.

That said, if you know your wedding date, your engagement announcements can double as save-the-date cards. Or your engagement announcements can serve as invitations to your engagement party (which we shall discuss in a different post).

Engagement announcement wording varies considerably depending on who is engaged. If you’re a romantic planning a very feminine and formal wedding, use formal language, but if you’re quirky and think your wedding will be, too, then go nuts with your wording. Anything from “Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Johnson are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Marjorie Johnson, to Samuel Beckett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Farnsworth Beckett” to “Hey, we’re hitched! Finally, right? Stay tuned for wedding details” works, so be as proper or creative as you like when writing your engagement announcements.

Do you need engagement announcements? I wouldn’t say “need,” because so few things associated with weddings are *necessary*. You may want to send out engagement announcements if:

  • You have lots of friends and relatives who live far away and might not hear about your happy news through the grapevine.
  • You’re planning an engagement party and want to let people know about your engagement via the invitations.
  • Your parents would like to let their friends know about your engagement (just make sure they’ll also be invited to the wedding).
  • You’re thinking of having a very formal wedding and want your whole engagement to be just as formal

Wedding Contract Advice from The Wedding Professor

Known across the matrimonial world as The Wedding Professor, Richard Cadieux has been a certified wedding consultant since 2002 and has lent his expertise at more than 500 weddings. Most brides-to-be have little to no experience negotiating contracts, which means much of what is promised to them by wedding vendors never gets put into writing. Consequently, those brides-to-be risk not only being taken advantage of, but also being left without any legal recourse. But The Wedding Professor’s new eBook changes all that and puts the power of negotiation into the hands of brides and grooms, who are the customer and who, in most cases, are making quite significant investments. If you’re a bride or groom looking for wedding contract advice, and think it’s a smart idea to protect yourself and your money, visit his blog today.
