Bridal veils add drama, romance, and mystery to a bride’s wedding day ensemble, and TeamWED loves them! Bridal veils are also the most iconic piece of bridal fashion we can think of. A wedding gown is just a dress, after all, but a veil is something that one rarely sees anywhere but at a wedding nowadays. We thought it was high time that we devote a little space to bridal veils, so here’s a short primer dealing with bridal veil lengths.
Birdcage Veil
This is the shortest of all veils and is also sometimes called a fascinator. Typically, these vintage-style bridal veils are crafted using a netting that has large openings and do little more than cover the forehead or face. They may be attached to a hat, comb, or clip, and work well on short hair styles. Birdcage veils are named for the way they frame the face.
Chin Length Veil
This style of bridal veil is rather like a birdcage veil, but is made using finer netting that gives it the look of a traditional bridal veil. Few brides choose this length of bridal veil, as most longer veils can be crafted with a short blusher that has the same look as a chin length veil and allows the bride to wear a longer veil at the same time.
Fly Away Veil
The fly away veil is the shortest traditional style bridal veil and is sometimes called a shoulder length veil. These are typically 20″ or shorter, which means that fly away veils will come exactly to the shoulder on some brides but not others.
Elbow Length Veil
Commonly, elbow length veils will fall anywhere from just below the shoulder to right at the elbow. An average elbow length veil will be about 28″ long. These are sometimes called blushers, but technically a blusher can be anywhere from 20″ to 60″ long (more on blushers below).
Fingertip Length Veil
A fingertip length veil falls right at the fingers on most brides, though very tall or very short brides may find that these veils fall elsewhere. At 36″, fingertip length veils look quite dramatic and are appropriate for more formal weddings.
Ballet Length Veil
These long veils hit the bride’s body somewhere between the knees and calves. Also known as waltz veils, ballet length veils are very formal and quite striking when paired with the right wedding gown. These usually measure in at about 56″, though there may be variations between designers.
Chapel Length Veil
At a whopping 108″ long, chapel length veils extend all the way to the ground. These veils are quite elegant, though the elegance comes in part from the width, which can range from 56″ to a full 108″. A chapel length veil is most appropriate at a very formal wedding ceremony held in a large space.
Cathedral Veils
The largest and longest of all the bridal veils, cathedral veils extend far past the end of the a wedding gown’s train. Favored by the monarchy as well as the rich and famous, these can measure in at 120″ or even longer. A cathedral length veil will look best in a large space that includes a long aisle that lets the veil spread to its full length before the bride reaches the altar.
Oh, and blushers? That’s the part of the veil that covers the bride’s face while she walks down the aisle. As mentioned above, the blusher can be almost any length that won’t trip up the bride. Some brides wear their blushers throughout the wedding ceremony until the kiss, while others wear it until they are given away by dad.

Wedding Contract Advice from The Wedding Professor
Known across the matrimonial world as The Wedding Professor, Richard Cadieux has been a certified wedding consultant since 2002 and has lent his expertise at more than 500 weddings. Most brides-to-be have little to no experience negotiating contracts, which means much of what is promised to them by wedding vendors never gets put into writing. Consequently, those brides-to-be risk not only being taken advantage of, but also being left without any legal recourse. But The Wedding Professor’s new eBook changes all that and puts the power of negotiation into the hands of brides and grooms, who are the customer and who, in most cases, are making quite significant investments. If you’re a bride or groom looking for wedding contract advice, and think it’s a smart idea to protect yourself and your money, visit his blog today.
